What Are Medical Illustrations and How Can They Be Used in a Personal Injury Case?

How do you best explain an injury? How do you communicate the pain and suffering someone has gone through as a result of a serious injury or incident of medical malpractice? This is a question we often ask ourselves as personal injury attorneys. We are often tasked with the job of helping judges, jurors, insurance adjusters, and others more clearly understand what has happened to our clients and the significance of their bodily harm.

One way we can tackle this challenge is by using medical illustrations. In today’s blog post we’re taking an in-depth look at what these are and why they’re so useful.

When we want to show the nature of the harm done to our clients, attorneys can commission professional medical illustrators to create renderings of the client’s injury. These illustrators are highly skilled and trained not only in art, but also in biology. They don’t just create generic illustrations of a hypothetical broken arm, for instance. Rather, they look at the client’s x-ray’s and review the doctor’s notes about any surgery that has been performed. In some cases, the illustrators even go as far as to observe a similar surgery in a research hospital or lab. Once their research is complete, they create an image of the injury that is true to scale and diagrams how it actually occurred, including bones, ligaments, fractures, and tears, all true to life.

While medical illustrations are technical rather than bloody or gory, they are extremely effective. If you’re squeamish, you may struggle to look at these illustrations without feeling faint because they so aptly express the severity of what has occurred.

Medical illustrations don’t always stop at what’s already happened though. They can also be created to reflect doctors’ expectations for the healing process, so the viewers can better understand the lack of movement or other side effects the injured person will be facing in the future.

When paired with excellent litigation skills, medical illustrations can really bring a punch to a personal injury case.
